How to play Clueffy
Clueffy is a free word puzzle with one six-letter answer, five guesses and five clues. You start with a single clue. Each valid wrong guess reveals the next one, so you can combine word meaning with letter feedback to find the answer.
Start with the clue, then test a word
- Read the clue shown beside the board. Think of a six-letter word it could describe.
- Type using your keyboard, or tap the letters on the screen. Use Backspace or the delete key to correct a letter.
- Press Enter to submit. A guess with the wrong length, an unrecognized word or a duplicate guess does not use a chance.
- Read the letter colors and any newly unlocked clue before making your next guess.
- Solve within five guesses. A fifth valid wrong guess ends the round and shows the answer.
Understand the letter colors
| Color | Meaning | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Green | Right letter, right position | Keep that position in mind. |
| Orange | Letter exists in another position | Try it in a different spot. |
| Dark | That copy is not in the answer | Avoid it unless another copy was confirmed. |
A worked example with repeated letters
This is an illustrative example, not today’s puzzle. Suppose the answer is TURTLE and you guess LETTER. The fourth letter, T, is green. L, the first E, the first T and R are orange. The second E is dark: the answer contains only one E, and that copy was already assigned.
The game assigns exact-position matches first, then matches remaining copies. An orange E and a dark E in the same row mean that only one copy was confirmed, rather than that the E feedback is contradictory.
Use clues and letters together
A clue can point to a word through its meaning, a familiar object or a double meaning. Consider more than one interpretation before submitting. When a new clue appears, keep the previous clues in mind: all five refer to the same answer.
On phones, only the newest clue is shown by default once a round advances. Use Show previous clues to read the earlier clues again. The on-screen keyboard carries the strongest feedback known for each letter. Your submitted rows provide the full detail, including individual repeated-letter copies.
Daily puzzle, practice and progress
The daily puzzle changes at 00:00 UTC. The displayed date is a UTC date, which can differ from your local calendar date. Everyone receives the same puzzle for the same UTC date. Progress and results are saved in this browser; changing devices does not transfer them.
Practice gives you another round from the site’s collection of 60 original puzzles. Words may recur. Practice does not affect the daily record or streak. Submitted guesses survive a refresh, while an unfinished word in the input box is not saved.
Hints, answer reveals and sharing
Hints are optional and closed by default. Opening one during an unfinished daily round marks that round as assisted. Revealing the answer ends the unfinished daily round without a win. Finished daily results stay unchanged when you later look at help.
The share button copies a colored result grid and the number of guesses used. It does not include the answer word or send a message for you. If clipboard access is unavailable, select and copy the fallback text.
When something does not work
Enable JavaScript to play. If a word is rejected, check that it has exactly six letters and try another word from the dictionary. If browser storage is blocked, the site displays a notice and the game can still be played, but progress will not persist. Clearing the site’s browser data removes saved progress.
